Nigerian Internet Dating Scams
The Nigerian Scammers are everywhere, they are in chat rooms, on Myspace, Facebook, tagged.com and almost every internet dating website. The way these con artists operate is under the guise of wanting a mature long term relationship, that they are just “looking for love”. In truth though, all they are looking for your MONEY.
The Nigerian relationship scammers are a big business, which is very lucrative, and is run just like a business. There is an office filled with people, who come to work to scam you out of your money. They operate with scripts, love letters and emails they have copied and pasted from other sources, fake documents to use as “proof” and use each other to answer the phone or call you when need be. Although they profess to be American and born in the US, they are invariabily working overseas in AFRICA (what a surprise) on construction projects that usually involve building churches or orphanages.
They start off with some sob story about either being a widower, or their wife left them for another man, usually their best friend or their boss. They usually say they have at least one child. They say all the right things, but you should be realistic and see that they are saying them ALL TOO SOON. This is a business, they dont want to waste MONTHS getting a payout from you, the longest is usually 4-5 weeks and then they start asking for money. They claim to be businessmen travelling to Nigeria for work related issues, or simply say they work in Nigeria. (Some are getting smarter now and not even telling you it is Nigeria). They seem well educated, funny, caring, and pay you so much attention! Once they profess their love and you return it, they know they have you hooked and the money scam falls into place.
At this point they may either talk about needing money for plane tickets to come and see you (Of course they will pay you back, they have the money, and often will offer proof that they do have it) and one of the many excuses is because they cant cash their check in Nigeria, or the check is late, or it is coming any minute. Of course, when you go to the airport to pick them up, they never show, and while you are crying and upset, they either call and tell you they had missed the plane, there was a problem with their paperwork and werent allowed to leave the country, or a sudden illness/accident occured! Now they need MORE money, and the scam continues UNTIL you stop paying. You would think after getting some money from you they would be on to the next, which is wrong, their motto is “bleed them dry til they have nothing left”. I cannot tell you how many people have become victims to this scam, and have been left with not just a broken heart, but in financial ruin as well.

I almost got scammed by a girl registered under “truluvneeded” who happens to have her email imbedded in her profile. Her supposed real name is Gift L.Williams who claims to be the daughter of an oil contractor (williams oil I suppose) who works as her dad’s auditor, but has since had a fight with him, and has fled from Auckland, New Zealand (where she claims to live) to Nigeria where she is hiding money which she acquired from an “over-invoiced contract”. She wanted to send this 2.7 million GBP pounds over in customs checked security boxes, and for me to pay the shipping fee. I refused. She didn’t mind, but then she said all that was stopping her coming to see me was that she’d been accused by the hotel she’s at of overstaying, and they’ve seized her passport. Until she pays only $750 US she can’t get it back. She only asks for a small contribution, and she will sell her laptop to pay the rest. This is where I said goodbye. She’s an attractive girl with black hair and olive skin – in her profile pic she’s wearing glasses and claims to be caucasian – in the photo she sent me there were 2 girls who looked almost identical sipping a cocktail. Her grammar is consistentently terrible, apart from once when I pointed this out, and the next email was perfect grammar, but in a different font, and seemed prepared for use on anyone. She’s still registered and keeps altering her profile in order to be at the start of the search list.
